Dominating.  Relentless.  Winners.  So many words to describe this team and all of them are  accurate.  This group of young men made history this last weekend at the Washington State 4A Championship Tournament.  The Saxons beat Federal Way 68-44 in the championship game on Saturday night and became the first team in state history to have back to back undefeated seasons.  Unbelievable.

The Saxons would not be denied their opportunity to repeat as undefeated champions.  They came into the game focused and reaped the benefits of their senior leadership and their experience of playing in championship games.  From the opening tip-off, that Ferris won, they never trailed Federal Way.  The Saxons out rebounded, out scored and took Federal Way out of the game early on.

Erick Cheadle went 5 for 5 shooting 3 pointers (on his way to 17) including one spectacular shot - a half court buzzer beater at the end of the first half - that was an absolute dagger for Federal Way.  Jared Karstetter had 15, Jeff Minnerly 12 and Dee Casto had 18 points and a record-setting 8 blocks (also set a tournament record with 25 total blocks).

It's been an amazing run with these kids.  We, as fans, have been able to witness something that won't happen again for a long, long time.  We have learned so much from their actions - determination, how to win, humbleness and most importantly - team.  It's been said a thousand times by these kids but it deserves repeating - they didn't care who was scoring as long as the team was was scoring and the results of their 2 year run speaks volumes.

The Streak

How impressive is this group of basketball players and the Ferris basketball program?  Consider the following:  As of February 14th, 2008, the Saxons haven't lost a game since March 10th, 2006 at the 4A State Tournament.  Ferris lost to Mt. Tahoma 67-62. Since that time Ferris has won 50 straight games, including two GSL Championships, a District, Regional and State Championship.

Now, in the GSL, the Saxons haven't lost since losing 75-57 at home against Gonzaga Prep on January 13th, 2006.  Before that, their last loss was to North Central 69-64 on January 21st, 2005.  That equates to 49 straight GSL wins and 59 of the last 60 GSL games that the Saxons have won.

Good job coaches and players!  Now, stay focused and continue the hard work as you head into the "second season" of the year.  Good luck and Go Saxons!  Let's hope for 8 more wins!

During the streak, the Saxons have outscored their opponents 3450 to 2333.  That's scoring an average of 70.4 pts per game and allowing 47.6 pts per game.  Average margin of victory - 22.8 points.
