Ferris took South Hill football
bragging rights for the year as they beat LC Friday
night 17-14 in a very physical game. Ferris
pounded the ball on the ground for over 100 yards
and held the LC team to 57 yards rushing. Once
again the defense stepped up huge with some big
stops and some key turnovers. All this with
the loss of a key two-way player in Shawn Stockton.
Stockton and the offense took the
ball on their first possession of the game, marched
down the field and finished it off with a Stockton
to Karstetter touchdown pass. Little did
everyone know that Stockton was injured 2 or 3 plays
before that pass. LC responded by putting
together a drive themselves and QB Taylor Eglet
threw a touchdown pass of his own to WR Matthew
Henry-Proost.
Ferris QB Jeff Minnerly would step
in and take the reigns from Stockton from that point
forward. While a little shaky at first,
Minnerly settled in and was able to lead the Saxons
on a couple of scoring drives in the second half.
The first scoring drive was in the third quarter and
ended with a 1 yard TD run by Minnerly. The second
scoring drive ended with what would prove to be the
game winning field goal of 30 yards. This was
setup by a beautiful 27 yard pass and catch from
Minnerly to Karstetter that put the Saxons in field
goal range.
LC would not go away quietly
though. With under five minutes to go Ferris
had the ball and then lost a fumble. LC ended
up scoring a touchdown. LC ended up getting
the ball back with around 2 minutes remaining but
then fumbled a snap and Ferris recovered. With
a little clock management, Ferris ran the clock out
and won the game.
MacKenzie Murphy was moved from
the slot position to fullback. This proved to
be a good move for the team as he rushed for nearly
60 yards.
This game was very important as
the Saxons remain atop the GSL standings and are a
half a game ahead of two other 2-0 teams, G-Prep and
U-Hi. Ferris is coming upon a very tough road
of opponents - next week it's Shadle(1-2) coming off
a 28-7 win over Rogers, then it's perennial power
house G-Prep (2-0) followed by the Mead Panthers
(1-2).
