Ferris vs. Moses Lake
11/04/06Game #10
Ferris Saxons come up just
short
<By Jeff Minnerly Sr>
In a game that "experts" felt the
Saxons shouldn't have been in (see pre-season
predictions), Ferris gave the visiting Moses Lake
Chiefs all they could handle coming up just short
and losing 14-13. While the Saxons may have
seemed a little "flat" in the first half, they came
storming back in the second half - more specifically
the 4th quarter.
In the first half, the Saxons
surrendered only one TD and were denied a touchdown
on 4th and goal. McKenzie Murphy took
the ball on 4th and goal appeared to break the plane
of the goal line, however, the officials spotted the
ball on the 1 inch line saying he never got in.
That was the only time in the first half that the
Saxons truly threatened. At the end of the
half, it was 7-0 Chiefs.
In the second half, the third
quarter was scoreless - and the crowd was about to
witness a great Saxon Team effort. In the fourth
quarter, the Chiefs drove the ball down and scored
with about 6 1/2 minutes remaining. That's
when the fireworks really started - the Saxons
received the ensuing kickoff. The offense came back
in and two plays later Minnerly throws and INT.
Don't worry, here comes the Ferris Defense to the rescue.
On the very next play the Chiefs ran an option play
and their QB decides to keep the ball and make
something happen. Bad decision - the Saxons D
forced a fumble and recovered the ball.
QB Jeff Minnerly began
moving the Saxons with a no-huddle offense and
started to pick apart the Moses Lake secondary.
That drive was capped off with a beautiful throw and
catch by Jeff Minnerly and Jared Karstetter,
respectively, for a TD. Now it
was 14-7 with about 4 1/2 minutes to go. Enter Dexter Belling and the
Saxon Special Teams. Belling nailed a
perfect onside kick that bounced at just the right
moment and the Saxons special teams came up with the
ball.
The offense proceeded to march
down the field with a key play being a pass to
Aaron Roberts over the middle who made it to
inside the 5 yard line. Then Minnerly and
Karstetter went to work one more time and hooked up
for a second TD pass with 1:29 to go. After
receiving a roughing the passer penalty, the Saxons
were on the 1 1/2 yard line. Coach Sharkey
decides to go for two and go for the win.
Minnerly rolled out and hit Andrew Weigand who was
tackled just short of the goal line.
The Chiefs then fielded the
ensuing onsides kick and tried to burn as much clock
as they could. The Saxons were going to get
the ball back with about 7 seconds remaining when
the Chiefs set up to punt. The snap went over
the punters head and it was Saxon football with 5
secs remaining. Dexter Belling had one shot at
about a 37 yard field goal into the wind that came
up about a yard short of the cross bar. End of
game, end of season for the Saxons.
It was a great high school game
and the Saxons should be proud of their
accomplishments this season. It was fun to
watch. Thanks to the Seniors and good luck to
you all. To the rest of you, we're already
looking forward to Ferris Football next year.
