Game #1

Ferris vs. North Central

Ferris Varsity Football gets off on the right foot for the 2006 season by beating NC 20-3.

A tale of two halves

Ferris 20 NC 3

Story by Brett Ward

The new look Saxons took the field Friday at Joe Albi Stadium against the Indians. The Saxons were ready to kick off to North Central but the kick was delayed due to the referee thinking the Saxons did not have enough players on the field.  That start was symbolic to the way the Saxons played on the way to their 20-3 victory.

It seemed like their start to the season was somewhat delayed when the Saxons fell down to the Indians 3-0 at half by way of Robinson's leg on a 24 yard field goal. The Saxons in this half had an unexplainable 5 turnovers, 3 fumbles and 2 interceptions. One of the picks, however, was just a great play by the North Central linemen tipping the ball and catching it.

The complexion of the game changed after the half.

The Saxons would not turn the ball over in the second half.  QB Jeff Minnerly started off the second half with a drive that gave the Saxons some new life after the defense made a nice stop. He drove the Saxons straight down the field, capping off the drive with a 21 yard pass to Mackenzie Murphy.

After that it was all Saxons.

Shawn Stockton would have touchdown runs of 1 yard and 65 yards on his way to 187 rushing yards and that was all the defense would need. They held the Indians offense to 143 total yards in the game while keeping the Indians rushing average to 1.25 yards per carry. There were also a couple of sacks throughout the game lead by Pat Parham. The Indians never found an answer for the defense of the Saxons. Andrew Weigand and Stockton also had interceptions.
