Ferris loses to Prep in hard
fought game.
<story by Brett Ward>
The stage was set. The Saxons, a young and talented
team, were facing the Gonzaga Prep Bullpups, a
very experienced team, under the Friday night
lights. The Saxons knew they were ready for the
upset in what was the game of the week.
Unfortunately, the experience
seemed to get them.
The Bullpups won a hard fought
game between the 2 teams by a score of 24-10.
The experience paid off in ways which you think
it would.
Turnovers. The Saxons turned over
the ball 5 times, 3 interceptions and 2 fumbles.
The Bullpups did not turn over the ball once.
Prep was also able to capitalize on these
turnovers.
Special Teams. Prep turned in
amazing special teams performance with punts of
71 and 60 yards by David Kries. They also nailed
a 43 yard field goal. Their kickoff coverage and
their kickoff returns were also key for them.
They kicked multiple balls into the endzone and
had a return out to the Saxons 45 yard line to
set up there first score.
And penalties. The Saxons made
some crucial mistakes that set them back.
Really besides that, the Saxons
outplayed the Bullpups. The Saxons had 296 total
yards while the Bullpups had just 137. The
Saxons held the Pups to just 1 completion the
entire game. McKenzie Murphy turned in a
Reggie Bush type run on the first drive, a
touchdown run of 65 yards. He had 89 yards
total. Karstetter and Minnerly
kept their combination going strong. The 2
hooked up for 11 catches for 143 yards. Minnerly
threw for 200 yards total. Dexter
Belling stayed perfect for the year on field
goals. He made a 38.
But all that matters is the 24-10
on the stat sheet.
The Saxons will play Thursday
evening at 4:30 against a hungry Mead Panthers
team. The Panthers need a win to have any shot
at making the playoffs.

Ferris and
Gonzaga Prep were both undefeated heading into
Friday nights game. Unfortunately, only one would win
and this time it wasn't the Saxons. Ferris
jumped out early, however, didn't score in the
second half and ended up losing 24-10.
RB Mckenzie Murphy scored first
with a 65 yard run on Ferris' first possession of
the game. They were able to add a field goal
(38 yarder by Dexter Belling) in the second quarter
but that would finish off the scoring for the
Saxons.
Offensively, Ferris moved the ball
well, however, were hampered by a couple of turn-overs
that put the Bullpups in great field position.
Field position turned out to be a key factor.
The Prep kicking game repeatedly put the Saxons deep
in their own territory. Defensively, the Saxons
were strong again. They kept QB Max Manix in
check and limited the offensive production of the
Bullpups.
Some offensive standouts for
Ferris were WR Jared Karstetter with 11
catches for 143 yards, RB McKenzie Murphy
rushed for 89 yards and QB Jeff Minnerly
threw for 200 yards on 23 completions. Good
job Saxons
