2007 Football GSL Champs - Ferris Saxons. Has a nice ring to it doesn't it? Well, that's exactly what the Saxons are after beating the Central Valley Bears 24-13. In a very entertaining high school football game, the Saxons improved to 8-0 and the Bears fall to 6-2.
The game started with an impressive Saxon drive that was capped off with a 16 yard touchdown pass and catch from Jeff Minnerly to Shawn Stockton. To Central Valleys credit, they weathered the storm, calmed down and fought back. In the 2nd quarter, the Bears had 3 scores (a TD and 2 FG's) and took the lead 13-7 and momentum into the half.
Ferris came out in the third quarter, forced a quick turnover and was able to punch it in with a 16 yard Nate Tonani TD run. That really seemed to deflate the Bears. The Saxons were able to score once more in the 3rd quarter with a 12 yard Karstetter TD reception.
In the 4th quarter, the Saxons held the ball on one drive for almost 8 minutes. With a few key scrambles by Minnerly for first downs, the Saxons were able to finish off the drive with a 24 yard Dexter Belling field goal. The Bears then only had just over 2 minutes to get two scores. The Saxons defense was not going to let that happen and they held the Bears. The Saxons got the ball back, ran the clock out and sealed their first GSL Football Championship. Congratulations Boys!!
Some game highlights -
- Shawn Stockton quietly had a big game. Forcing 3 fumbles, scoring a TD and on a 4th and short in the 3rd quarter, went Tebow on everyone. In a designed play, he faked a run, dove in the air and while in the air he literally flicked the ball to Beau Brett for a 9 yard gain. Fun play.
- Jeff Minnerly had a big night also. He threw for 117 yards and 2 TD's but even more impressive, he ran for 100 yards.
- The Defense again had a great night. They forced 4 fumbles, recovered 3 and had 1 interception.
Only one game left in the regular season - that is next week against Rogers at 8:00pm at Albi. For now, the Saxons get a little break over the weekend, can enjoy the homecoming dance then start to focus on the Pirates.
