UNBELIEVABLE
If you didn't see it, you
may not believe it. Then again, if you were there and saw it,
you still may not believe it. Down 27-14 with about 5 minutes
to go, the Ferris Saxons were able to punch in two scores and get
the victory 28-27 over the Moses Lake Chiefs.
Ferris, continuing to
show that they are a second half team, had a rough first half.
They were held to 69 yards total offense and their only score came
on a blocked punt. Adrian Milsap broke through, blocked the
punt, picked up the deflection and ran into the endzone.
After making some
adjustments at the half, the Saxons were able to move the ball and
caught a break when the Moses Lake punter mistakenly had his knee
down when he recieved a low snap. The Saxons capitalized and
scored on a 1 yard TD run by QB Jeff Minnerly.
In the 4th quarter, the
Chiefs scored again and the score was 27-14 with about 7 minutes to
go. The Saxons started running a no-huddle offense.
Facing a 4th and 9, Jeff Minnerly hit Shawn Stockton, who was not
going to let anyone else catch that ball, to convert. A few
plays later, Minnerly hit Stockton again on a 20 yard seam route and
made it 27-21 with 4 minutes to go.
Ferris recovered the
ensuing onside kick but were unable to score and turned the ball
over on downs with about 1:30 remaining. The defense came up
huge denying the Chiefs a first down and forcing them to punt.
Ferris got the ball back on the 50 with 36 seconds remaining.
A quick 5 yard pass to Aaron Roberts on the sideline then came...the
run.
Minnerly was flushed out
of the pocket and decided to turn up field. He cut back across
the field after avoiding a couple of would be tacklers. Then
he picked up huge blocks from Jared Karstetter and then Shawn
Stockton, and dove from
about the 3 yard line for what appeared to be a touchdown, however
the ball was spotted at the one. Once Minnerly started running
you could hear throughout the stands "no, no don't run
throw the ball!!" and
then he picked up one block. Then people were saying "ok, ok
now get out of bounds!" and then another block and it was "GO! GO!
GO!". Amazing.
With 16 seconds to go,
Mckenzie Murphy ran it in and the game was tied. Now the
Saxons just needed an extra point to go ahead. This didn't go
without a little drama itself. There was a procedure penalty
that moved them back 5 yards. Dexter Belling calmly nailed it
through the uprights and the Saxons were ahead for good.
The Saxons now face the
Mead Panthers who beat the CBL #1 team, Wenatchee 21-7.
Congratulations boys!! Hopefully the Saxons take this game and
build on it.
