Saxons Top the Wildcats from Mt Spokane

The Ferris Saxons were able to complete the first half of the regular GSL season by getting their 3rd win, this time over Mt. Spokane by a score of 31-14.  The win puts the Saxons at 3-1 and tied for second in the league.  The Saxons were able to get their win with a combination of stingy defense and an efficient offense lead this week by the running of RB Gage Orosco.

The Saxons got the first possession of the game and drove down the field and scored on a 34 yard  Alex Belling field goal.  On their ensuing possession, the Saxons got a beautiful 45 yard throw and catch from Connor Halliday to Jason Bates, who just outjumped the defender and hauled in the pass and put the Saxons up 10-0.  The Saxons would get one more score (a nine yard TD run from Gage Orosco) before the half and hold the Wildcats scoreless.

In the third quarter, the Saxons came out and forced the Wildcats to punt on their first possession of the half.  Ferris would drive to the 2 yard line and try unsuccessfully 3 times on the ground to get into the endzone.  Following a Ferris timeout, the Saxons came out in the same formation but this time Halliday would turn and through a pass that Jason Bates would go up and get and score again.

The Saxons had a bit of a let down at this point of the game, as they allowed Mt. Spokane to get their first score and the Saxons offense was unable to move the ball.  Ferris was able to fight through this let down and get their final score on a 2 yard QB sneak that put the game out of reach.  Gage Orosco had a great night rushing and accumulated a bunch of yards on the last scoring drive - he was the only one to touch the ball on that drive until Connor punched it in from the two yard line.  Orosco finished the game with a career best 176 yards rushing on fifteen carries and had one touchdown.

The Saxons have are scheduled to have a bye week in their GSL schedule, but the Saxons won't have any time off this week.  Rather, they will be packing their bags and heading to Southern California to play the Aztecs of Esperanza High School in a non-league game.  SaxonSports will have more on the Aztecs coming soon.

OLD MAN MINN NOTES: Great night for Orosco - he nearly doubled Ferris' entire season  rushing production in one game - nice to see him settle in and become a real threat.... tough loss for the Saxons tonight as Brandon Olson, a LB who also shares time with Orosco at RB, was injured in the third quarter and did not return....the play of the night involved Orosco, but not as a RB - in the third quarter, Orosco was back to punt, fielded a bad snap, started to run and eluded three would be tacklers and somehow kicked it on the run and got off his best punt of the night....second play of the night was holding the Wildcats on 4th and 7, Ferris made the tackle and overcame what OMM thought was a very generous spot by the official - all this and the Wildcats were still about 2 inches short of a first down... the loss of Olson allowed sophomore Kurtis Karstetter get some quality PT at LB ... Hard to believe that half the GSL season is over this week....
