Ferris is a team that thrives on quick striking big plays.
The game on a misty and foggy (yet overall pleasant)Friday
night saw them get exactly that. With some big plays from
the usual cast of characters along with some huge plays from
others, the Ferris Saxons are moving on to the
4A State Football Tournament
after beating Pasco 34-14.
The first quarter saw Pasco strike first
after recovering a fumble and getting to the 6 yard line.
Two plays later they scored and took a 7-0 lead. The Saxons
were able to muster a 39 yard Alex Belling field goal in the
first quarter and then the second quarter the big plays
happened.
The first big play was when Aaron Roberts
took off on a streak down the far side and QB Connor
Halliday hit him in stride for a 39 yard TD and Ferris got
their first touchdown.
With under two minutes remaining in the half,
Pasco began a drive to try and score before half. With a
curious mix of play calling and clock management, they got
to about mid-field. On their last play, the QB forced a
pass to the sidelines, that CJ Haney stepped in and got his
first of two interceptions. Two seconds remained in the
half and rather than take a knee and get into half, Coach
Sharkey called a play that the Saxons executed flawlessly.

Halliday dropped back and hit Jason Bates who
was cutting across the middle of the field, he then
lateralled the ball to Aaron Roberts who was running back
across the field. With the entire Pasco D, going one way
and Aaron going the opposite direction with the ball, two
blockers (see Saturday morning sports page for photo) he ran
35 yards untouched into the endzone. Saxons up 20-7 at half
and all the momentum. The second
half Ferris scored in the third quarter on the shoulders of
Stephen Horning who had 104 yards rushing. While Ferris was
ahead, Pasco would simply not go away and managed a score in
the third quarter to keep within striking distance. The
Saxons would get one more score in the fourth to pull away
and Pasco was not able to handle the stifling Saxon D.
With the win, Ferris lives to play another
game. Next week the Saxons will play Jackson (9-1).
SaxonSports knows nothing about this team except we are
making the assumption that they are somewhere in Washington
:) We'll see if we can dig up some information about this
team. That game will be played on Saturday at Joe Albi
stadium again.
OLD MAN MINN NOTES: A hook and
lateral? What a great call, great execution and great play -
I'm still trying to decide who got down the field faster -
Aaron Roberts or Coach Sharkey - boy he was excited and
flying down the sidelines, it was a great site...Another
week with a great performance by Stephen Horning - what a
nice luxury to have a running game come alive at this time
of the season - the Saxons have had 2 of their best 3 weeks
rushing the last two games...CJ Haney was a man possessed on
Friday night - he had some big hits, INT's and a deflection
in the endzone (see above) - great game CJ....The S-R
reported that Connor Halliday ran the last TD in from the 1
yard line, but I could swear that it was Aaron Roberts,
someone tell me I'm wrong....It was good to see Nathan
Tonani back on the field and making the effort to play.... |
